Town Guide: Toms River
Compared to other towns in the area, Toms River is a bit more sprawling. It's where many area visitors should head if rain or inclement weather threatens their plans of sunny beaches.
It is to the left of the Barnegat Inlet, which means you have to travel a bit to get to the beaches at Lavallette, Seaside Heights, Ortley Beach or elsewhere.
It boasts two indoor parks - an Urban Air franchise and Go Playland, the former better for older kids and the latter for the little ones. There's also a movie theatre playing blockbusters if it's drizzling or you need a break from the sun.
There's also Insectropolis, another great rainy day activity for kids not afraid of bugs, and the Robert J. Novins Planetarium.
Need something you can't find at the local shops? Hit up the Ocean County Mall, which boasts 120 stores from national brands.
It's also an excellent beer drinking town, boasting three popular breweries/taprooms
- Toms River Brewing has been around for a couple of years, and you can find their shiny cans up and down New Jersey.
- Artisan’s Brewery & Italian Grill - combined Jerseyians two loves - Italian food and craft beer - in an intimate setting.
- Battle River Brewing on Main Street has trivia nights every Monday and live music every Thursday.
For dining - fine and otherwise -there are plenty of options.
You can eat on the deck overlooking the eponymous Toms River at Water Street Bar and Grille. If you're having a beer and a bite waiting to pick someone up from the nearby Bus Station, you could hang at The Office Bar and Grill. For fancier options, try Rue 561 bistro.
