For many New Yorkers, Atlantic Highlands is the quickest (or less stressful) way to get to the Shore. A 50-minute Seastreak Ferry ride from Wall Street deposits you right at the Atlantic Highlands, where you have a choose-your-own-adventure (we recommend both).

After marveling at the 250-year-old lighthouse, you can go immediately to the Sandy Hook Beach.

Or you can head directly to downtown Atlantic Highlands, where you can eat and drink to your hearts content.

While the beach is a huge attraction, there's also nature nearby by way of the Hartshorne Woods Park and ample biking on the Henry Hudson Trail. Check out the NYC skyline (whether or not you just came from it) - at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook.

Food and Drink

One must-visit: Carton Brewery on East Washington Ave - four blocks from the ferry.

Local brewer (and 7th generation Atlantic Highland-adjacent resident) Augie Carton says you can't go wrong with almost any of the nearby restaurants.

He especially calls out the Thai Kunya Siam, which he recommends bringing a four pack of double IP to counter the spicy food at the BYOB establishment.

If you want an award-winning steak, he recommends The Copper Canyon.

Other options he recommends are the Harborside Grill for pub food, The Atlantic House for great cheeseburgers, Gaslight for live music and good beer, and On The Deck for fried seafood and a great view while drinking beers. All are within walking distance of the brewery.

Afterwards, you can get ice cream at the Nicholas Creamery.

Staying There

If you are not renting directly through VRBO or Airbnb like the Sandy Book Beach Cottages, there aren't a ton of hotel options. Check out the Blue Bay Inn or look to start in neighboring Highlands or Sea Bright.
